A specialty sleep system like an adjustable bed requires some specialty bed sheets. As the name implies adjustable beds move in ways that a traditional flat bed does not. Bed sheet sets designed for a traditional mattress and box spring may be less than adequate when used with an adjustable bed. Adjustable bed sheet sets are made with the needs of adjustable bed owners in mind.
Adjustable beds are designed to change the elevation of the head and the feet. The foundation of the adjustable bed can flex into shapes resembling a modified S. The types of mattresses used in combination with an adjustable bed foundation range from dense latex foam to specially designed innerspring mattresses. These innerspring mattresses differ from a traditional mattress in several important ways.
Most traditional innerspring mattresses are made with a special edge wire. The edge wire is sewn into a heavy seam along the outer edges of the mattress. The edge wire runs along the perimeter of the mattress, top and bottom. The edge wire helps to stiffen the mattress and provide a certain amount of edge support. While the edge wire can be flexed somewhat, like when the mattress is moved, the edge wire is not designed to be bent.
Innerspring mattresses that are designed for use with adjustable bed foundation are made without an edge wire. The absence of the edge wire allows the mattress to bed and flex in response to the foundation. The innerspring is equally flexible and is not much different from a standard coil spring set.
The most popular choice in mattresses for adjustable beds are those made from latex foam. Latex foam mattresses provide a great of support and are flexible enough for use on an adjustable bed. Most of us familiar with the popular memory foam mattresses, most of which are assembled using a combination of latex foam and visco-elastic memory foam. The amount of memory foam used depends on the manufacturer and the price.
All of this brings us to the subject of adjustable bed sheet sets, why you need them and what to look before making a purchase decision.
A standard fitted bottom sheet will have elastic sewn into the corner edge seams. When a standard fitted bottom sheet is used on an adjustable bed, the fit of the sheet will not conform to the bed. As the mattress is moved up and down, the side edges of the bottom sheet edges will pull away from the mattress.
There are a couple of ways to address this problem. Some manufacturers will tailor the bottom sheet using elastic banding that is sewn into the side edge seams. The use of elastic banding around the perimeter of the sheet helps to hold the bottom sheet in place. A snug fitting bottom sheet is less likely to bunch up as the mattress is adjusted. Other manufacturers tailor their adjustable bed sheets with extra material at the side edges. The extra material is tucked up under the mattress.
I have researched the five or six major manufacturers of adjustable beds and these are the most common sizes of adjustable beds made. The 60 inches by 80 inches queen size and the twin extra long size 38 inches by 80 inches are the most popular. Two of the extra long twin sizes can be placed side by side to create a king bed. Adjust bed sheets are available for all of these sizes. One thing that our adjustable sheets offers is the choice of a single large top sheet or twin smaller individual top sheets for the split adjustable beds. Of course, the split adjustable beds each take their own bottom sheet but having one top sheet or two top sheets can solve several problems. Maybe one of the sleepers likes to steal the sheets, problem solved. Having two separate sheets also helps with room design. Someone may wish to put a nightstand between the two beds or place the beds across the room from each other. Choice when it comes to adjustable bed sheets is good.

As consumers, we like to think that we getting a good value for our money. To this end, shopping for adjustable bed sheet sets requires that you do some basic research about bed sheets. Here a few things to look when shopping for adjustable bed sheet sets or other type of bed linen.
For most people, cotton is the most popular fabric for bed sheets. The most commonly available cotton fiber species is Upland cotton that is grown in many parts of the world, including the American South. Other species of cotton fiber include Egyptian and Pima. As the name implies, Egyptian cotton is grown primarily in Egypt while Pima is grown in the American Southwest and throughout Latin America. Both species are known for being extremely soft, mostly because the fiber length is much longer the Upland cotton.
For bed linens, cotton is often blended with synthetic fabrics like polyester. Cotton polyester blends are soft, durable and easy to care for. Other fabrics used for bed sheets and other linens include fabrics made from bamboo and hemp.
Whether you choose cotton, cotton polyester, hemp of bamboo, always choose a bed sheet set with a thread count of two hundred or more. Thread count is a measure of the number of threads per square inch of fabric. The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the fabric will be.
